Scholarships for Social Sciences Majors

The University of Montevallo offers scholarships that vary in award criteria and amounts for students majoring in psychology, sociology, social work, and political science.  A special application must be completed to apply for the following scholarships by the March 1st deadline.

AAUW Hallie Farmer Legacy Scholarship

Funded by the UM Chapter of the American Association of University Women, this scholarship is awarded to a student whose activities and goals reflect the interests and ideals of Dr. Hallie Farmer.  A member of the Alabama Women’s Hall of Fame, Dr. Farmer was active in politics and reforms in the state and was a member of the UM faculty in this department.  Note: Application for this scholarship is separate from the other BSS scholarships and is by invitation only.

ABEX Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a political science major who has attained at least sophomore status with a minimum 3.0 overall GPA during the previous scholarship period.

The Deborah D. and William F. Denson III Scholarship

Established through the generosity of Deborah and William Denson (class of 1965), this scholarship is awarded to outstanding rising juniors or seniors in political science and history; other social science majors may also be eligible.

Dr. Lucille B. Griffith Scholarship

This scholarship, named in honor of a former chair of the history department and editor of a classic documentary history of Alabama, recognizes students majoring in history or political science who have exhibited promise in their studies and who have established financial need.

The Eugene B. Sledge Memorial Scholarship

The Sledge Memorial Scholarship is presented in honor and memory of Dr. Eugene B. Sledge, UM biology faculty and author of With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa, a memoir of his service in the Pacific Theater in World War II with the First Marine Division.  Dr. Sledge’s book has been described as “the best World War II memoir of an enlisted man” as well as “one of the finest memoirs to emerge from any war.”  Dr. Sledge lived in Montevallo until his death in 2001.

The John B. Walters, Jr., Memorial Scholarship

The Walters Scholarship is awarded to students majoring in a social science field who have attained at least sophomore standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00.  Preference is given to applicants who are preparing for a career in international relations.

The Janet Wilson Reid Scholarship

Awarded to a junior or senior history major with outstanding performance in the study of history, the recipient of this scholarship must have established financial need.
